Overview

The HiFlo Q550B is an affordable stainless steel submersible drainage pump designed for light-to-medium-duty water removal around homes, farms and lifestyle properties.

Suitable for draining sumps, swimming pools and flooded areas, its vortex design can handle water containing particles up to 35mm. It is also suitable for calf milk transfer applications.

The external float switch provides automatic start and stop operation as water levels rise and fall, helping protect the pump against running dry.

With corrosion-resistant stainless steel construction, a lightweight design and a 10m power cable with three-pin plug, the Q550B is a practical choice for everyday drainage jobs.

Key features

  • Stainless steel vortex drainage pump
  • Suitable for dirty water and calf milk applications
  • Handles particles up to 35mm
  • Automatic external float switch
  • Corrosion-resistant stainless steel construction
  • Lightweight and easy to use
  • 10m power cable with three-pin plug
  • Maximum immersion depth of 7m

Important: Not suitable for construction sites, ponds, fountains or bio-treatment systems.

Performance

The Q550B is designed for light-to-medium-duty drainage and water transfer rather than pressurised water supply.

Pump performance

  • Maximum flow: Approximately 175 L/min
  • Maximum head: Approximately 7m
  • Motor power: 0.5kW / 0.7HP
  • Maximum particle size: 35mm
  • Maximum immersion depth: 7m
  • Operation: Automatic external float switch

Approximate performance at different flow rates:

  • 50 L/min — 5.6m head
  • 100 L/min — 4.1m head
  • 150 L/min — 1.9m head

Maximum flow and maximum head occur at different operating points. Actual performance depends on the vertical lift, discharge pipework and friction losses.

The vortex design allows suitable dirty water containing suspended particles to pass through the pump, within its rated solids-handling capacity.

Construction

The Q550B features corrosion-resistant stainless steel construction and a vortex-style pumping arrangement designed for suitable dirty water and drainage applications.

Its external float switch provides automatic water-level control, switching the pump on and off as the water level changes.

The float must have sufficient clearance to move freely, making sump dimensions and float-switch positioning important installation considerations.

Supplied with a 10m electrical cable and three-pin plug.

Warranty: 1 year against manufacturing defects, subject to our general warranty terms.

FAQs

Can this pump operate automatically?

Yes. The external float switch automatically starts and stops the pump as the water level rises and falls, helping prevent dry running.

Is it suitable for a small sump?

It can be used in a sump provided there is enough room for the external float switch to move freely. For particularly narrow sumps, the HiFlo JH550B with its internal float switch may be a better option.

Can it pump dirty water?

Yes. Its vortex design allows it to handle suitable dirty water containing particles up to 35mm.

Can it be used for calf milk?

Yes. The supplier identifies calf milk transfer as a suitable application. Ensure the pump is cleaned appropriately and meets the hygiene requirements of your particular installation.

Is it suitable for construction-site drainage?

No. The Q550B is an entry-level light-to-medium-duty pump and is not intended for construction sites, ponds, fountains or bio-treatment systems.

Does it require a separate controller?

No. The external float switch provides automatic water-level control.
